1.     In the blink of an eye – very quickly

  • In the blink of an eye, the whole building had collapsed.
  • The magician disappeared in a blink of an eye.

2.     Out of the blue – suddenly / unexpectedly

  • Out of the blue, a loud knock on the door shattered the silence.
  •  She announced, out of the blue, that she would be leaving the school.

3.     It dawned on me that… – I realised

  • It dawned on me that I had left my bag behind at the bus stop.
  • It dawned on me that the decision I made would change everything.

4.     At the back of my mind – subconsciously thinking

  • At the back of my mind, I knew that something was not quite right.
  • At the back of my mind, I was aware that time was running out.

5.     A blessing in disguise – something good coming from something bad

  • Losing the match turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it taught us the value of teamwork.
  • The heavy rain was a blessing in disguise because it saved the crops from drought.

 

 These idioms can be widely use in written and spoken english. So they are pretty good to know.
